POSITIVE BEHAVIOR SUPPORT AT UNDERWOOD GT MAGNET

PBS is a system of management developed to “support high student performance”.

          Some key features of PBS:

          - an approach to discipline that is proactive and outcome based.

          - adapted throughout the entire school.

          - establishes and reinforces clear, behavioral expectations.

          - an emphasis on continuous data-based improvement.

          - all decisions based on supporting data.

Underwood began using the PBS model 3 years ago.  During the Fall of 2006, Underwood sent a team of staff members that included administrators, specialists, spec ed., classroom teachers, guidance counselor and IRT to WCPSS training. During this intensive training, the team created a matrix based on UNDERWOOD PRIDE. In addition a school-wide matrix was completed. The PBS Underwood team went back to Underwood and provided staff development throughout the first year. The school-wide matrix was given to all staff members for input/suggestions/revisions. Underwood's WCPSS facilitator is Mitzi Safrit.

At the beginning of each school year as well as after the winter and spring break, school-wide assemblies are held. K-5 students move to different areas to review PRIDE expectations. The areas that are reviewed include the gym (assemblies), cafeteria, hallway, playground area, bus/carpool area and bathrooms. PRIDE expectations are displayed in each of these areas.

Students/classes can earn "tickets" from all staff when PRIDE expecatations are displayed. Each time a class "earns" 100 tickets, they are turned in for a paper unicorn and the whole class celebrates! This year, some classes have students earn marbles instead of tickets but they are based on the same school-wide and classroom expectations.

Parent trainings have been offered over the past two years during the day as well as night. Different members of the PBS Team presented. The emphasis was on ways that parents could support PBS at home.
