Ms. Crane, who currently lives in North Carolina, is a historian and journal writer. She has written fourteen ABC or number books, including T is for Tarheel and Wright Numbers. On April 6, she spent the day with Underwood students. She delighted all grade levels with her stories of places that she has visited. Peter Howe Visit

Author Peter Howe visited Underwood GT Magnet on Wednesday October 1, 2008.  Mr. Howe was born in London, lived in New York for thirty years, and currently resides in Connecticut with his wife and two dogs. He is a former New York Times Magazine and Life magazine picture editor and is the author of two books on photography: Shooting Under Fire and Paparazzi. His latest novel, Waggit’s Tale, is his first novel for children. It is based on the real life of his dog Roo, whom he found abandoned in Central Park in 1981.  Two sequels to Waggit’s Tale are in the works.

Mr. Howe spoke with two groups about his path to becoming a writer. He also shared how the story Waggit’s Tale came to be. Students listened intently while he read an excerpt from his book, and then had an opportunity to ask Mr. Howe questions.  They asked not only about the book and its characters, but also about his career as a writer. Mr. Howe’s favorite question was “Do you get paid to write?”  He answered by explaining the process through which his draft goes to the publisher, then back and forth to him for editing, then on to be published, and finally marketed and sold. It takes a lot of sales for the money to trickle back to him!

Underwood students and staff enjoyed their time with Mr. Howe. Hearing first hand from a published author certainly encourages meaningful writing, thus inspiring students to write and publish their own work.  Thanks to Quail Ridge Books for their help in coordinating this visit! We certainly look forward to author visits in the future!
